The things you learn "oh this does that" isn't as important as learning to balance and focus your decisions. People who start at Settler end up having problems because they want to do everything like they could on Settler, building everything or doing everything is a recipe for failure later on (and boredom in Settler). Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth launches players into space, where they can colonize a new alien world and build a new future for humanity. I know a lot of folks will want to start low to get the hang of it but it really can be a bigger problem longer term. Most of Earths work force comes from intelligent androids and dexterous machines, and millions of unemployed risk. You can still win or lose at that level if you're a n00b and make bad choices but you'll learn and still have fun and can play casually just fine at Settler. The AI is pretty dumb so even there you'll be fine. Prince is about right to start at (middle) and don't go below Warlord. and you absolutely can't build do everything and they keep wanting to do it because it "worked" at the lower level and they just make it harder on them self. It’s a classic example of what can be accomplished when developers and gamers learn from one another to make the best experience possible.
That can be really frustrating and if you hit any of the 4x strategy game forums there are always folks who are frustrated and making things harder for them self because they previously played like X. You really do end up relearning the game later if you start at Settler. there is pretty much no opposition and it's a good way to pickup bad habits that you'll have to break later and that is just more of a hassle longer term.
